Question! We've done this both ways in the past, so I'll take a popularity poll:

If the video format is such that the English dialogue subtitles will not fit neatly under the Japanese character introductions which pop up from time to time, which do you prefer?

(1) Just let the dialogue cover the Japanese names. After all, the names will be clearly visible in the new Romaji character introductions we add.

(2) Put the dialogue subtitles off to the side or top of the screen so that they don't cover the Japanese, even if it means our eyes will have to jump around mid-conversation.

Thanks!

Option 2. Lots of fansubbers do that when there's a lot of talking going on/ when there are characters singing and talking at the same time.

Yes, and it often drives me crazy, which is why I want to give people a choice. If enough people feel as you do, I'll do it that way. :)

Plus, there's a difference between putting the lines of two characters in two different places, and putting the first half of a sentence on the bottom of the screen, and the last half of it squashed to the side somewhere. (With more close-ups than an anime, words on the top of the screen tend to end up written across people's foreheads. *g*)
